SAPS Capricorn Flying Squad Arrests Suspect After R81 Chase Yields R20,000 Illicit Cigarette Seizure

Intelligence-led operation in Limpopo intercepts silver Volkswagen Touareg transporting contraband Remington Gold tobacco from Makotopong to Bendor.

LIMPOPO – The SAPS Capricorn District Flying Squad has arrested a 34-year-old suspect and seized illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R20,000 following a targeted intelligence operation in Limpopo. The successful bust concluded a vehicle pursuit that ended on the outskirts of Polokwane, reinforcing ongoing law enforcement efforts to dismantle illegal tobacco distribution networks in the region.

According to a spokesperson for the SAPS Capricorn District, the operation was initiated on Friday, 21 August 2026, at approximately 18:00. Acting on a credible tip-off from a reliable source, law enforcement units were dispatched to the Sebayeng policing jurisdiction to locate a silver Volkswagen Touareg suspected of ferrying contraband tobacco products.

Upon identifying the vehicle as it exited Makotopong Village, Flying Squad members moved to intercept it. The driver allegedly ignored police signals to halt, initiating a high-speed evasion toward Polokwane via the R81 route. The pursuit was safely terminated when officers strategically boxed in the suspect’s vehicle at the entrance to Bendor along the same highway.

With the driver present, authorities conducted a thorough search of the Volkswagen Touareg. The inspection revealed a hidden stash of Remington Gold illicit cigarettes, carrying a projected street value of R20,000.

The 34-year-old individual was immediately taken into custody on charges related to the possession of illicit tobacco goods. The suspect is slated to face the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.

Police investigations into the matter remain actively ongoing as authorities continue to trace the supply chain of the seized contraband.
