SOWETO, JOHANNESBURG — Law enforcement officials have confiscated 100 firearms and associated ammunition from a Soweto security company, marking a significant enforcement milestone for Operation Buyisa. The decisive raid occurred on Saturday, August 22, after the firm was found in direct violation of the Firearms Control Act during a targeted compliance inspection.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the security company’s Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) accreditation had been recently suspended. Despite this regulatory halt, the responsible parties neglected to legally dispose of or surrender the weapons as mandated by law, prompting the immediate police intervention and seizure.
The raid is a core component of Operation Buyisa, a national intervention strategy launched in 2025. The initiative is specifically designed to purge illegal weapons from the streets and enforce strict regulatory compliance among lawful firearm holders. During the Johannesburg inspection, investigators also discovered that the company’s firearm storage facility fundamentally failed to meet the safety and security standards stipulated by national legislation.
