EASTERN CAPE – A rapid tactical response by the South African Police Service (SAPS) has resulted in the apprehension of six individuals and the successful recovery of stolen goods and weapons following a late-night KwaZakhele house robbery.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the home invasion unfolded on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, around 23:10. A family was gathered at their residence on Tlalore Street in KwaZakhele when a white Toyota Tazz pulled up, carrying four armed perpetrators—three males and one female.
As the homeowner was securing the front gate following a friend’s departure, the group confronted the family, forcing them back inside the premises. The intruders aggressively demanded iPhones, though the residents did not own any. While two of the suspects ransacked the bedrooms in search of valuables, the remaining man and woman detached a plasma television from the living room wall. The group also made off with three mobile phones before attempting their escape. However, they were forced to abandon the heavy television when it proved too large to fit inside their getaway car.
Authorities at SAPS KwaZakhele were notified immediately, triggering a rapid area-wide lookout for the described vehicle. Law enforcement officers acted swiftly, intercepting and searching the white Toyota Tazz shortly thereafter.
The vehicle search yielded significant results. Officers recovered the three phones taken during the incident, plus four additional mobile devices suspected to be connected to separate criminal investigations. The seizure also included two replica handguns, one replica rifle, eight rounds of .38 Special ammunition, and a separate dangerous weapon. Detectives also uncovered various goods believed to be the proceeds of prior home invasions in the Motherwell and Joe Slovo policing precincts. The Toyota Tazz utilized in the crime was subsequently impounded.
All six suspects, ranging in age from 16 to 33, are now in custody. They face a slate of charges including house robbery, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a dangerous weapon, and possession of suspected stolen property. Captain Janse van Rensburg emphasized that the docket could expand as detectives link the seized items to additional outstanding cases.
Remarkably, the apprehension was executed without any shots being fired, and there were no reports of injuries or structural damage to the property. The accused are scheduled to make their initial appearance at the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
