JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG — The critical window for the SASSA Gold Card to Postbank Black Card migration is rapidly closing, with officials issuing a stark warning to social grant beneficiaries: the final deadline of 31 August 2026 is approaching fast. Those who fail to complete the transition risk severe disruptions to their monthly financial access, as the legacy gold cards are slated for permanent deactivation once the rollout concludes.
To prevent a last-minute logistical crisis, Postbank is strongly advising recipients to complete the upgrade well before their standard payout dates or the final weeks of August. Thamsanqa Cele, Chief Commercial Officer at Postbank, noted that foot traffic is already surging at processing centers.
“We are already noticing a steady increase in queues at several of our card replacement sites and based on current trends, we anticipate that queues will become considerably longer in August, which is the final month before the deadline,” Cele stated. He emphasized that procrastinating will likely result in “substantial delays due to the expected increase in demand.”
While the financial institution has actively deployed additional operational resources to manage the nationwide rollout smoothly, the onus remains on beneficiaries to act promptly and utilize the remaining weeks effectively.
The upgrade process is entirely free of charge and has been decentralized for maximum public convenience. Beneficiaries can obtain their new Postbank Black Cards at major retail partners, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar. These dedicated replacement centers operate across the country from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00. To pinpoint the most convenient location, recipients can simply dial the USSD code 120 355# on their mobile phones. A valid South African identity document or a temporary ID is mandatory for verification.
In a bid to streamline operations and reduce public confusion, Postbank explicitly requested that the public refrain from visiting local SASSA offices for inquiries pertaining to the card transition. Instead, grant recipients should direct all payment-related questions to the nearest Postbank service point or utilize the dedicated telephonic support channels.
The Postbank contact center is fully staffed to handle a wide array of account issues. Agents are equipped to assist with troubleshooting missed disbursements, resolving PIN complications, reporting lost or stolen cards, facilitating card reissues, and investigating declined transactions. Beneficiaries requiring direct support can reach the team toll-free at 0800 5354 55.
