Search for Zenande Chiloane Ends: Body Recovered from Crocodile River

MBOMBELA, MPUMALANGA – The desperate ten-day search for Zenande Chiloane has reached a tragic conclusion following the discovery of the 21-year-old’s remains in the Crocodile River. The young man was initially trapped underwater after a vehicle plunged into the waterway earlier this month, prompting an extensive multi-agency recovery operation near Mbombela.

The fatal crash involved three occupants in total. While the others in the car were accounted for, Chiloane disappeared beneath the surface, leading to fears that he was trapped below. For over a week, emergency crews and grieving relatives scoured the area, holding onto hope that the missing youth might be stranded in the dense vegetation and still alive.

The breakthrough occurred on the tenth day of the operation. Captain Johannes Potgieter of the Mpumalanga police diving unit explained that the afternoon recovery was the direct result of combining aerial technology with manual dive teams. Morning drone flights mapped the water, but thick reeds and tree canopies on small river islands created blind spots that the cameras could not penetrate.

“Whenever the drone pilots reported sections they couldn’t see under the trees, we would deploy divers to swim those specific areas,” Potgieter stated. It was during a manual sweep of one of these obscured islands that the team located the 21-year-old, whose body had become wedged beneath a submerged tree.

According to the diving unit spokesperson, the frigid temperatures of the river played a dual role in the prolonged ordeal. The extreme cold kept the remains submerged for an extended period, significantly delaying the discovery. However, those same low temperatures helped preserve the body in good condition.

The grieving relatives, who had set up a camp on the riverbanks to hold continuous prayer vigils, have since positively identified their son. Potgieter noted that the family is currently in a state of profound shock, transitioning from hoping for a miraculous survival to accepting the devastating reality. Due to the chaotic nature of the immediate recovery scene, the captain had not yet been able to formally address the family directly.

Law enforcement officials have registered a culpable homicide case to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The remains are now slated for a postmortem examination as the legal process moves forward, bringing a sorrowful close to a community’s desperate wait.
