FREE STATE — Internal security breaches at a local detention facility have led to severe criminal charges after a Sasolburg correctional officer was arrested for allegedly facilitating an illicit narcotics trade while on duty. The weekend incident has drawn sharp focus on contraband smuggling, resulting in the seizure of hundreds of pre-packaged drugs directly from a uniformed staff member.
The swift law enforcement response unfolded on Saturday, 8 August 2026. According to police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani, authorities were mobilized at approximately 14:00 following a targeted complaint. The tip-off indicated that a prison warder was actively holding and distributing illegal substances within the perimeters of the Sasolburg Correctional Centre.
Acting on the intelligence, officers arrived at the facility and were immediately pointed toward an African male dressed in official Correctional Services attire. Sergeant Josephine Rani noted that the suspect was discovered allegedly in the act of dealing dagga directly on the premises.
A subsequent search of the suspect yielded a massive haul for a single arrest. Law enforcement officials confiscated exactly 803 individual ziplock bags of the drug, calculating the street value of the stash at R8,050.
The 52-year-old employee was promptly taken into custody, stripping him of his duties and placing him behind bars. The accused is now facing dual criminal counts of possession of dagga and dealing in dagga. He is expected to make his first appearance before the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court soon, where the state will formally present the charges stemming from the unprecedented internal bust.
