Emalahleni, Mpumalanga — Officials from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks have moved to seize assets allegedly tied to Hangwani Maumela, a person of interest in the multibillion-rand corruption case surrounding Tembisa Hospital.
The operation targeted Omar’s Moto Den, a high-end supercar dealership located in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga. According to SIU representatives, the premises is suspected of functioning as a conduit to conceal assets linked to the alleged diversion of public healthcare funds.
SIU officials stated that the enforcement action was grounded in multiple preservation orders and three consecutive court directives. Central to the inquiry is a Bentley reportedly observed at the dealership on May 22, a date specified in the judicial orders.
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel encountered resistance from a family member of the dealership’s owner, who declined to grant access to the surveillance control room and disputed that the vehicle in question was on site. The individual was briefly escorted to a police vehicle before being allowed to return to the premises. When efforts to obtain voluntary cooperation stalled, authorities arranged for a locksmith to assist in accessing the secured room. Following the locksmith’s arrival, the individual relented and permitted officials to proceed.
SIU representatives confirmed that investigators are now reviewing CCTV recordings from May 22 to determine whether the Bentley—or any of four other vehicles believed to be stored at the location—was relocated after that date. The unit emphasized that, despite the court-issued preservation orders, the Bentley allegedly remained under the dealership’s control, a circumstance described as a potential violation of judicial authority.
According to SIU spokespersons, the dealership is under scrutiny for allegedly serving as a proxy entity for a syndicate implicated in the Tembisa Hospital fraud scheme. Authorities indicated that the asset recovery effort is part of a wider probe aimed at tracing misappropriated public funds and restoring accountability.
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement committed to pursuing all available avenues to recover state assets and advance proceedings against those allegedly responsible for the corruption.
