The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) released a statement praising the collective restraint shown by community members, civil society groups, religious figures, and law enforcement agencies, noting that the orderly nature of the marches highlights the maturity of the country’s democratic framework.
While authorities reported that policing strategies were highly effective and the vast majority of the migration-related marches remained calm, they did address isolated pockets of criminal activity. Law enforcement officials confirmed that police swiftly responded to specific incidents of looting and attempted theft. The government issued a stern warning that individuals attempting to hijack the protests to commit crimes will be met with the full force of the law, with ongoing operations dedicated to identifying, arresting, and prosecuting these offenders.
Highlighting the democratic nature of the events, the GCIS noted that the peaceful conduct of the protesters proves South Africans can firmly advocate for their issues while upholding the dignity and rights of others. The state acknowledged the valid public anxieties driving the marches, which include a lack of economic opportunities, the impacts of irregular migration, service delivery frustrations, border management inefficiencies, and broader public safety concerns. Officials stressed that these pressing issues will be tackled systematically through established democratic and legal channels.
Authorities were particularly encouraged that the overwhelming majority of marchers actively denounced violence, vigilantism, intimidation, provocation, and property destruction. The government emphasized that such destructive behaviors have no place in a constitutional democracy and actively work against the community’s shared goals of economic growth and safety.
To address the root causes of the public’s concerns, the government reiterated its unwavering dedication to the Comprehensive Approach for Migration Management, a strategy initially unveiled by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This multi-faceted plan is designed to rigorously enforce labor and immigration legislation, fortify national borders, and upgrade migration management infrastructure. Furthermore, it aims to close existing policy and legislative loopholes while fostering collaborative efforts with other African nations to manage continental migration challenges effectively.
In terms of immediate enforcement actions, the state is making significant strides in processing foreign nationals across impacted provinces. According to the latest operational statistics provided by the GCIS, authorities have successfully repatriated 4,286 foreign nationals and deported an additional 419 individuals over the past few days.
Reassuring the public, the government stated that migration will continue to be managed through coordinated, constitutional, and lawful measures. The ultimate objective is to ensure a nation where immigration statutes are strictly enforced, borders are secure, communities are safe, businesses compete fairly, and constitutional values and human dignity are maintained.
