FREE STATE — Authorities have apprehended seven individuals in connection with the recent Thembalihle tuckshop looting that targeted foreign national-owned businesses near Vrede. The unrest, which resulted in the ransacking of over 15 stores and damage to state vehicles, was quelled by the Harrismith Public Order Police Unit.
The chain of events unfolded on the evening of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. According to police reports, the disturbance was sparked at approximately 19:30 when a 16-year-old resident from Extension 3 purchased snacks from a neighborhood shop. After experiencing severe stomach cramps, the teenager alerted local residents, prompting an angry crowd to confront the shop owner.
Tensions escalated when the proprietor allegedly declined to open the premises. In response, the mob forced their way inside and stripped the store of its groceries. The chaos quickly spread as more locals descended on the area, ultimately looting more than 15 tuckshops owned by foreign nationals across the township.
The disorder extended beyond property theft. Two state police vehicles stationed in the area were vandalized, resulting in deflated tyres and shattered windscreens. Furthermore, private security contractors who had been deployed to help de-escalate the volatile situation came under attack from the rioters.
A swift intervention by the Harrismith Public Order Police Unit led to the arrest of seven suspects. Officers also managed to retrieve a portion of the stolen merchandise. By 04:00 on Thursday morning, peace was restored to the township, and the area remained calm.
Law enforcement from the Public Order Policing unit, working alongside the Vrede SAPS, maintains a visible presence to monitor the situation and prevent any flare-ups. The seven individuals in custody are currently being processed and are expected to make their first appearance at the Vrede Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
