Thembisa, Gauteng — A 23-year-old woman was fatally shot in Thembisa, east of Johannesburg, on Monday morning in what police initially described as a robbery but which the victim’s family now believes may have been a targeted attack by someone she knew.
The young woman was walking to work shortly before 6 a.m. when she was gunned down. Her family received a phone call informing them of the shooting soon after she had left their home. While authorities have classified the incident as a robbery, relatives on the scene have raised serious doubts about that characterization, noting that most of her personal belongings were still found on her body. The only item reportedly missing was her cell phone.
Family Points to Someone Close to the Victim
The family’s suspicions center on an individual they describe as being very close to the deceased. According to relatives, after learning of the shooting, they contacted this person, who was expected to rush to the scene given the closeness of the relationship. That individual never arrived. When family members accompanied officers to the person’s residence — a home the suspect allegedly shared with the victim — they found the individual had already fled.
An uncle of the victim, speaking at the scene, described the victim as a deeply loving person and the primary breadwinner for the family. He expressed the family’s urgent demand for justice, saying their grief is compounded by the belief that this was no random act of violence.
Police Confirm Person of Interest
Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed that investigators are actively pursuing a person of interest in connection with the killing. Muridili emphasized that the case is still in its preliminary stages and that detectives are interviewing witnesses and following leads generated from conversations with the family.
“Our preliminary investigation shows that this 23-year-old woman was on her way to work and was robbed and shot and killed by an unknown suspect or suspects,” Muridili said, outlining the police’s initial position. However, she acknowledged that as the investigation deepens and the leads the local tracing team is following begin to materialize, the official stance may evolve.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Ekurhuleni Serial Killings Ruled Out
The killing initially sparked widespread concern that it could be connected to a disturbing string of recent discoveries of women’s bodies across the Ekurhuleni region. Over the past several months — and as recently as the day before this incident — the remains of multiple women have been recovered in the area, including a woman found near a cemetery in Thembisa over the weekend and another discovered close to a railway station in Springs.
Muridi moved to quell those fears, stating definitively that the Thembisa shooting is not linked to the other cases. “This one is not linked to the other bodies that have been found in Ekurhuleni. We are definitely ruling it out,” she said, noting that the victimology in this case does not match the pattern seen in the other incidents.
A Community Gripped by Fear
Despite the police ruling out a connection to the broader spate of killings, the mood in Thembisa and surrounding communities remains one of deep anxiety and outrage. Residents say the frequency of violence against women in the area has made everyday activities — like commuting to work — feel perilous. Many community members have expressed frustration that what once seemed like distant news stories are now unfolding on their own doorsteps.
The victim’s identity has been confirmed by authorities, though her family has yet to receive formal notification through official channels.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward as detectives work to trace the person of interest and determine the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
