LIBODE, Eastern Cape — Three suspects have been shot dead and two others arrested following an intensive multi-stakeholder police operation linked to the fatal ambush of two Eastern Cape police officers. The officers were gunned down in the early hours of Friday morning while responding to a spaza shop robbery in Libode.
The tragic incident unfolded when the two officers were intercepted by alleged robbers behind a local spaza shop before they could intervene. The slain officers have been identified as a 30-year-old member of the public order policing unit and a 51-year-old member of the national intervention unit. Their service pistols were stolen during the attack.
In response to the killings, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Eastern Cape headquarters immediately launched a 72-hour rapid response window. This triggered a massive, intelligence-driven multi-stakeholder operation involving the Hawks, K9 units, the national intervention unit, and local SAPS members.
The coordinated effort quickly yielded results, leading police to a premises in the Ziphunzana locality of Libode. There, authorities successfully recovered the stolen service pistols, which were promptly returned to police custody. Following this breakthrough, two suspects were arrested in connection with the possession of the firearms. One of the detained individuals is a 29-year-old woman, who remains in custody at the Mthatha Central Police Station.
The operation continued into the night, leading law enforcement to a different locality within the same vicinity, known as the Angola location in Libode. According to reports, a gunfight ensued when the remaining suspects allegedly opened fire on police officers who were attempting to question them and follow up on intelligence leads. Police returned fire, fatally wounding three suspects.
In total, five suspects are linked to the incident, with three neutralized and two now facing justice.
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner General Vuyisile Ncata has publicly applauded the swift and decisive multi-stakeholder operation, commending the teams for their rapid tracking, apprehension, and resolution of the case involving the fallen officers.
Beyond the police action, the incident has sent shockwaves through the local business community. A shop worker and witness, identified as Mr. Moses, revealed that this was not the first robbery at this specific spaza shop, nor the first in the broader Ziphunzana locality. Citing severe safety fears for himself and his employer, Mr. Moses indicated he is considering relocating to a different area. Local shop owners and business fraternity members are reportedly holding urgent discussions to establish better safety measures amid growing concerns over the rising frequency of spaza shop robberies in the region.
