TMPD Officer and Attorney Partner Face Polokwane Court Over R1.75 Million Deceased Estate Fraud and Money Laundering

A multi-agency Hawks operation leads to the custody of a Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department official and a legal practitioner, accompanied by a strict directive against sharing unverified investigative details online.

LIMPOPO – A Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) officer and his attorney partner are facing serious allegations of R1.75 million estate fraud, theft, and money laundering following their appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court. The case centers on the alleged illicit draining of a deceased estate’s funds to finance a luxury vehicle purchase.

Peter Nonyane, 36, and 33-year-old legal practitioner Charlotte Tibana, appeared before the court on Monday, 17 August 2026. Nonyane’s apprehension occurred in Pretoria on Friday, 14 August 2026, executed under J50 warrants. The arrest was the culmination of a coordinated, multi-unit operation spearheaded by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Serious Commercial Crime Investigation based in Polokwane. Supporting tactical units included the Pretoria K9 Unit, Briant S.O.R.T, the Pretoria Flying Squad, the Gauteng Water Wing, K9 Unit Command, and Tracker SA. Tibana subsequently surrendered to law enforcement on the morning of the hearing.

According to the state’s allegations, the illicit financial activity traces back to 28 October 2024. On this date, funds were reportedly diverted unlawfully from a deceased estate’s trust account into a First National Bank (FNB) account registered to the Estate of the late Mr Masha. Immediately following this transfer, two separate payments—amounting to R1.65 million and R100,000—were allegedly routed to a Standard Bank account tied to McCarthy Mercedes-Benz Wonderboom. These funds were purportedly used to acquire a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz AMG G63.

Investigators from the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Limpopo allege that a total of approximately R1.75 million was unlawfully extracted from the estate. The probe indicates that segments of this money were funneled into Nonyane’s personal banking account before being laundered through the luxury motor vehicle transaction, directly prejudicing the estate and its rightful beneficiaries.

The docket was formally registered for investigation into fraud, theft, and money laundering. The presiding officer has postponed the matter to Friday, 21 August 2026, to accommodate a formal bail application and allow for continued investigative work. Both Nonyane and Tibana remain in police custody in the interim.

Amid the ongoing legal proceedings, a Hawks spokesperson issued a firm advisory regarding the unauthorized replication of the official Hawks emblem and the reckless distribution of unconfirmed operational details across social media networks. The spokesperson stressed that the emblem is a protected Directorate symbol, and its misuse by private individuals or organizations to feign official endorsement is strictly prohibited.

The DPCI emphasized that leaking unverified operational intelligence can severely compromise active probes and expose sensitive law enforcement methodologies. Consequently, the public is strongly encouraged to fact-check information prior to dissemination and to depend solely on official DPCI communication platforms for authoritative updates regarding the Directorate’s activities.
