PRETORIA, Gauteng — The sudden passing of a Malawian national during a South Africa repatriation operation has drawn heartfelt condolences from state officials. Addressing the public on Tuesday, the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration shared the nation’s collective grief, extending sympathies to the bereaved relatives, fellow travelers, and the government and citizens of Malawi.
According to initial reports provided by the state, the deceased individual was traveling on a bus destined for Malawi. The vehicle had completed its loading process at a designated repatriation processing center and was actively en route to its cross-border destination when the incident occurred.
The tragedy unfolded approximately 10 kilometers away from the transit facility when the passenger unexpectedly passed away. Recognizing the emergency, the bus operator immediately halted the journey, turned the vehicle around, and drove back to the processing hub.
Upon the bus’s return to the center, local law enforcement was dispatched to the scene. The South African Police Service (SAPS) took charge of the situation, initiating mandatory investigative procedures required for all sudden and unexplained fatalities. This included a comprehensive forensic evaluation of the scene in strict adherence to standard operating protocols.
In its official communication, the government emphasized that the handling of the situation was carried out with strict professionalism, ensuring the deceased was treated with the utmost dignity and respect.
Once SAPS concluded its forensic and administrative duties, the vehicle was officially cleared by authorities. The bus was permitted to leave the facility at midnight, allowing the rest of the passengers to safely resume their journey back to their homeland.
