Trio Apprehended After Delft Constable Sustains Serious Injuries in Axe Attack

Three suspects are facing court charges after a police constable was severely injured in an axe assault outside the Delft police station early Monday.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly condemned the violent incident, which unfolded at approximately 02:05 on June 8, 2026. A constable was stationed outside the facility’s Community Service Centre when a suspect armed with an axe approached and struck the officer on the head.

A second officer who witnessed the assault immediately responded by firing warning shots. The attackers fled the scene, abandoning their vehicle in a bid to escape on foot.

The incident triggered a joint pursuit by SAPS members and LEAP officers, which culminated in the apprehension of three individuals: two men, aged 23 and 25, and a 23-year-old woman. Authorities also successfully recovered the axe believed to be the weapon used in the assault.

The victim was rushed to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries and is currently reported to be in stable condition.

The three suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to appear in court to face charges linked to the attack. SAPS continues to investigate the full circumstances and motives surrounding the incident.
