TRT Fatally Wounds Armed Suspect Linked to Mqanduli Police Murder in Eastern Cape

EASTERN CAPE — A coordinated, intelligence-driven operation by the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Mqanduli has resulted in the fatal wounding of an armed suspect, the recovery of an unlicensed assault rifle, and the discovery of the deceased’s alleged involvement in several high-profile murders, including the killing of a police officer.

The incident unfolded on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at approximately 14:30, when TRT members were executing a follow-up operation to track down a suspect wanted in connection with a murder. According to a spokesperson for the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the operation led officers to Mbulawa Location in Mqanduli, where the suspect was spotted driving a white Toyota single-cab bakkie.

When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the suspect fled, sparking a high-speed pursuit along the R411 in the direction of Coffee Bay. The chase concluded when the suspect’s vehicle slowed down upon reaching Mbulawa. As TRT members approached the vehicle, the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm directly at the police car. Perceiving an imminent threat to their lives, the officers returned fire. The suspect sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. No police personnel were injured during the exchange.

Following the shooting, officers recovered an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle with a filed-off serial number. The suspect’s vehicle has been impounded to aid in ongoing forensic and criminal investigations.

A spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that preliminary investigations have linked the deceased to multiple serious criminal cases. The suspect was identified as a person of interest in a murder case in Thafalehashe. Furthermore, the deceased is heavily linked to the murder of a police officer who was shot and killed at Eziko Tavern in Mqanduli. This specific case is currently being investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

In accordance with standard operating procedures for incidents involving fatal police shootings, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified. The IPID will independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting to ensure full transparency and legal compliance.
