Law enforcement agencies in Mpumalanga have confiscated illegal tobacco products worth nearly R2 million and arrested two foreign nationals in a coordinated, multi-agency operation spanning Nelspruit and White River.
The breakthrough occurred on the morning of Friday, 5 June 2026, when a Toyota Hilux was intercepted in Nelspruit. Upon searching the vehicle, officers uncovered 50 master cases of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value exceeding half a million rand. The two occupants of the vehicle—foreign nationals aged 35 and 43—were immediately taken into custody.
This vehicle interception was the direct result of an intelligence-led surveillance operation that began a day earlier. On Thursday, 4 June 2026, authorities received a tip-off concerning illicit operations at a storage depot in White River. Acting on this information, police secured a search warrant for the premises and strategically positioned themselves to execute it immediately following a suspected delivery.
A specialized task team was deployed to monitor the area and track vehicle movements. The unit comprised investigators from the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Commercial Crime branch, the White River K9 unit, and Divergent Operations. Their coordinated efforts successfully identified the Toyota Hilux as a key transport vehicle for the contraband, leading to its interception and the subsequent arrests.
Following the bust in Nelspruit, the joint team moved to the White River storage facility to execute the search warrant. They were joined for this phase by personnel from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs division and the Nelspruit Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).
The search of the depot yielded a significant secondary seizure. Investigators uncovered an additional 87 master cases and 45 cartons of illegal cigarettes, valued at over R1.2 million. When combined with the initial R500,000 seizure from the Hilux, the total estimated value of the confiscated illicit tobacco reached close to R2 million.
The two suspects remain in police custody as their cases are finalized. They are scheduled to make their first court appearance at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 June 2026.
