Two Men to Appear in Court Following Armed Incident Involving Cash-in-Transit Escort

Two male suspects, aged 32 and 36, are scheduled to appear at the Matlala Periodical Court on Thursday, 18 June 2026, facing charges of pointing a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.

The arrests were executed by Matlala police following an incident on Monday, 15 June 2026, at approximately 11:30 in Mabopane Village within the Gamatlala policing area.

According to reports, a 52-year-old man was driving an open Toyota bakkie to escort a cash-in-transit truck along the Seshego-Gilead Road (R567). During the transit, a white Toyota Venture overtook the cash-in-transit vehicle. A passenger in the Toyota Venture allegedly pointed a firearm at the truck, prompting the cash-in-transit crew to respond with gunfire.

The suspects fled the scene, abandoning the white Toyota Venture before escaping into a nearby house and subsequently into the surrounding bushes.

Investigating officers traced and interviewed the owner of the abandoned vehicle, whose information led to the identification of the driver. Police arrested the first suspect, who had sustained gunshot injuries. He subsequently assisted authorities in locating a second suspect.

Upon arriving at the identified location, police found the second suspect, who was also injured and in possession of a firearm. He was immediately arrested.

The firearm and the abandoned Toyota Venture have been seized as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
