EASTERN CAPE – Facing charges for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, Mfundo Dinga (40) and Aphiwe Mpofana (31) stood before the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 July 2026. The court remanded both individuals in custody, postponing the matter to Friday, 17 July 2026, to allow for a formal bail application.
The court appearance follows a coordinated law enforcement operation on Sunday, 12 July 2026, at approximately 17:00. Acting on an intelligence tip-off, police tracked a grey Volkswagen Polo reportedly carrying two armed occupants along the R61 route near the Seaview locality, within the Mzamba policing precinct.
Upon locating the vehicle matching the provided description, officers executed a lawful traffic stop. A subsequent search yielded two unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the driver, while a third weapon was confiscated from the passenger.
Police authorities confirmed that all three unlicensed firearms were successfully seized during the operation. The grey VW Polo has been officially impounded to assist with further investigation into the matter.
