LEEU-GAMKA, Western Cape — A catastrophic Western Cape N1 crash has claimed the lives of 21 people following a horrific multi-vehicle collision in the Karoo on Sunday night. The deadly incident occurred on the N1 highway between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, triggering a massive emergency response and launching a major police investigation.
Western Cape Mobility department spokesperson Muneera Alllie confirmed that the collision involved two Toyota minibus taxis and a station wagon. Preliminary reports from authorities suggest that one of the vehicles, which was traveling towards Cape Town, veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a severe and deadly impact.
First responders arrived to a chaotic and tragic scene. Officials reported that 18 occupants suffered fatal multiple injuries and were declared deceased on the scene. Three additional victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility, where they were sadly declared deceased on arrival, bringing the total number of fatalities to 21. Additionally, at least 18 other survivors sustained various injuries and were transported to several regional hospitals by the Western Cape Department of Health for urgent medical treatment.
The aftermath of the wreck initially led to the N1 being closed in both directions to allow emergency crews and traffic teams to safely attend to the victims and clear the wreckage. During the closure, motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution, expect significant delays, and follow the instructions of on-site personnel. The designated alternative route diverted traffic via Prince Albert Road along the R407, connecting to the N12 towards Beaufort West. Following extensive cleanup operations, authorities have successfully cleared the debris and reopened the highway to traffic in both directions.
Police in Leeu-Gamka have officially opened a culpable homicide docket and are actively investigating the exact cause of the collision. Meanwhile, the provincial government has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, sending heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected.
A representative for the Western Cape government stated that the immediate priority is supporting the bereaved families and ensuring the injured receive the best possible care. The official also thanked the tireless traffic officers, emergency services, and medical staff who worked relentlessly at the scene.
