EASTERN CAPE — The Makhanda Magistrate’s Court has handed down a 15-year direct imprisonment sentence to Zola Dennis Saul, finalizing a major sexual assault conviction in the Sarah Baartman District. The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, also declared the convicted rapist unfit to possess a firearm, bringing a decisive legal conclusion to a case that originated with a brutal attack in 2025.
The court heard that Saul had lived with the 26-year-old victim’s mother starting in 2016, eventually marrying her in 2022. He was later evicted from their shared home after the mother discovered his attempts to initiate an inappropriate relationship with her daughter.
The assault took place on the morning of 23 July 2025. Saul returned to the residence under the pretext of needing to charge his cellular device. Finding the 26-year-old victim home alone, he lured her into a bedroom, overpowered her, and sexually assaulted her without her consent.
The survivor promptly reported the attack to her mother. Upon learning of the incident, local community members confronted Saul, who verbally admitted to committing the offense. Before law enforcement could be notified, the crowd physically assaulted the suspect. Responding police officers swiftly arrived at the scene, safely extracted the accused from the volatile situation, and placed him under formal arrest.
The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Sandra Catherine of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Following multiple remands during the bail application process, her rigorous legal efforts resulted in bail being successfully opposed at the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court on 28 August 2025, ensuring Saul remained in custody pending trial.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, publicly praised the meticulous work of the FCS Unit investigator for constructing an airtight case that successfully removed a dangerous offender from the public.
In her concluding remarks on the matter, Major General Kupiso issued a firm advisory to the public, urging communities to reject vigilantism and continue placing their trust in the formal legal system to deliver justice.
