As last season’s treble winners, the Orlando Pirates kick off their title defense in Soweto against Nedbank Cup champions Durban City FC. The Buccaneers are chasing a historic fifth consecutive MTN8 crown. Speaking ahead of the clash, Pirates captain and team spokesperson Nkosinathi Sibisi emphasized the importance of the fixture for the club’s momentum.
“It’s a tournament we’ve enjoyed playing and I think it sets the tone for everyone,” Sibisi noted. He explained that securing an early victory provides immense motivation for the supporters to come out in numbers, though he acknowledged that nothing can be taken for granted in a unique knockout format, especially when leveraging home-ground advantage.
Meanwhile, African champions Mamelodi Sundowns officially launch their domestic campaign at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. After missing the opening weekend of the Premiership, Sundowns welcome Polokwane City to Pretoria. Sundowns spokesperson and defender Aubrey Modiba highlighted the unpredictability of their opponents, who enter the clash with a new coach and a revamped squad.
“They’ve got a new coach and new players… they’re going to be different from last season,” Modiba observed. “But in this competition, you can never write anyone off because anything can happen.” He stressed the need to match their opponent’s fight and intensity while relying on home advantage to delight their fans.
