ATLANTA, Georgia – A man was fatally shot while stepping off a MARTA bus in southwest Atlanta on Tuesday evening, sparking a multi-agency manhunt for three suspects still on the run.
The shootout occurred just after 6 p.m. at the Oakland City MARTA station along Campbellton Road. Officers arrived to find an adult male victim who had been shot and later died from his injuries.
MARTA Deputy Chief Willie Davenport told reporters that the victim and another individual were stepping off the bus when a group of males approached. “Both parties exchanged words. Gunshots were fired, and that’s when the victim ran from the bus loop to the parking lot,” Davenport said.
According to Davenport, an officer was patrolling the parking lot at the time of the shooting, heard the gunfire, and called it in immediately. MARTA police used their real-time crime center to track the suspects running over a hill toward a nearby apartment complex.
Authorities established a perimeter with the help of Atlanta police and a police helicopter. One suspect was taken into custody, but three others remain at large. As of late Tuesday, the perimeter and crime scene had been broken down, though detectives continue following leads.
Deputy Chief Davenport noted this is the first homicide MARTA police have investigated this year. The victim has been identified only as an adult male. No further details about the suspects have been released.
