San Antonio, Texas — Police are investigating the death of a woman whose burning body was discovered by hikers on the Leon Creek Greenway trails on the city’s northwest side.
The grim discovery occurred this morning when people walking or biking along the trail spotted smoke and went to investigate. They found a woman’s body still on fire roughly a quarter mile from a trailhead parking lot near the 7500 block of Prue Road. The emergency call was received around 8:52 a.m.
When officers and fire crews arrived, they confirmed the victim was deceased. Investigators determined the victim was an adult female, though her identity, age, and the circumstances that led to her being on the trail remain unknown.
Police reported that the woman’s body was still burning when the first officer reached the scene. Evidence of an accelerant was found nearby, prompting the fire department’s arson unit to assist in the investigation.
A police spokesperson said authorities are still in the early stages of the probe and have not ruled out the possibility that someone else was involved. The spokesperson added that the victim’s body will be transported to the medical examiner’s office to determine the exact cause of death.
“There is not a danger to the public in this area,” the spokesperson stated, while urging anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact police.
The incident has drawn attention to safety on the popular Leon Creek Greenway trails, with the spokesperson acknowledging community concerns but emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and no conclusions have been reached.
No suspects have been named, and police continue to gather evidence at the scene.
