Suspect Killed in Police Shootout After Wounding Nottingham Officer and Firing on Family in Raymond, NH

Raymond, New Hampshire — Matthew J. Massey, 38, of Raymond, was shot and killed Saturday night during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers after a day-long manhunt triggered by reports that he had fired on family members and then wounded a responding police officer.

According to statements from authorities, the incident began around 1:30 p.m. when police received a call about a man shooting at members of his family. When officers arrived at the home on Ham Road, Massey fired a rifle at them, striking one officer. The injured officer, a member of the Nottingham Police Department whose name is being withheld, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Massey fled the scene into a wooded area, prompting a large-scale manhunt involving state and local tactical teams. A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents, and an automated alert was sent out warning people to stay indoors and avoid the area.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., troopers spotted Massey in the woods near Ham Road, not far from the original incident location. As state and local tactical teams moved into position to take him into custody, Massey fired at law enforcement. Officers returned fire, striking Massey. He was confirmed deceased at the scene, and a long gun was recovered next to him. No troopers or officers were injured in the nighttime confrontation. The shelter-in-place order was subsequently lifted.

Colonel Hall of the New Hampshire State Police addressed the incident, confirming the sequence of events. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit will investigate all aspects of the case, including Massey’s motive.

The facts remain as reported in the official update: Massey was the subject of the manhunt that began after the afternoon shooting at the family home. He shot at arriving officers, wounding the Nottingham Police officer. Hours later, when located and approached, he again fired on law enforcement before being fatally shot in the return fire.

No additional details on prior warrants or background were included in the primary police statements beyond the events of that day. The investigation is ongoing.
