Fort Worth, Texas – A Fort Worth family is grieving the loss of 15-year-old Prince Washington, who was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting while sleeping inside his own home early Thursday morning.
According to his father, James Washington, bullets tore through the walls of their residence on Glenbrook Lane around 1 a.m., striking Prince as he slept in his room. James Washington described the horrifying moment his son stumbled out of the bedroom bleeding, saying “Dad, I’ve been hit,” before collapsing on the floor.
“He was on the telephone with his girlfriend when that happened,” James Washington said. “He came out of his room bleeding, saying, ‘Dad, I’ve been hit.’ That’s what he said and collapsed on the floor.”
Prince was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.
James Washington remembered his son as a “great kid” who was respectful, faithful, and deeply loved the Lord. “When I say a great kid, a great kid,” he said. “Yes, sir. No, sir. Yes, ma’am, no, ma’am. Love the Lord. Very respectful.”
The teen was a promising student and standout basketball player at South Hills High School, with many dreams and a bright future ahead that was tragically cut short.
Neighbors described the terrifying gunfire, with one saying it sounded like “somebody knocking, like really fast to my door,” only to later realize someone had been killed.
Fort Worth police said Prince was fatally shot during the drive-by outside the home. Investigators have not released information about any suspects, and there are currently no suspects at this time.
The family is left heartbroken after what should have been a routine goodnight became their final moments together. James Washington never imagined that saying goodnight to his 15-year-old son would be the last thing he ever said to him.
This senseless act of violence has left a promising young life unfinished and a family devastated.
