Residents of Coronationville continue to face severe water shortages, a crisis that has persisted for months, even as Rand Water proceeds with critical infrastructure maintenance aimed at boosting supply ahead of the high-demand summer season.
Rand Water has confirmed that its scheduled maintenance, running from tomorrow until June 2, is on track. The project is intended to improve water supply reliability, but the utility has warned that low to no water pressure may affect parts of Johannesburg and neighboring provinces during this period.
A Community in Crisis
Despite assurances, Coronationville residents say they have already been without reliable water access for an extended period. Frustrated community members have resorted to collecting water in small containers and bowls for daily needs, including cooking and bathing.
Community activist Melissa, a local resident, expressed skepticism about the maintenance bringing relief. “We haven’t had water for the longest time,” she said. “Why wasn’t this maintenance done when we were already without water? Now, we face another 30 days of shortages.”
Lack of Communication and Support
Residents accuse authorities of poor communication and inadequate contingency measures. While Rand Water has stated that affected municipalities must provide alternative water sources—such as tanker deliveries—locals say these efforts have been inconsistent.
“The water tankers are a laughing stock,” Melissa said. “There’s always fighting in the community because some areas get water while others don’t, or the tankers arrive empty.”
Political Allegations and Demands for Transparency
The crisis has sparked accusations of unequal water distribution, with Melissa claiming that informal settlements like Slovo Park and Kathrada Park have 24-hour water access, while Coronationville remains neglected.
“The city needs to tell us the truth,” she insisted. “This feels political—they only provide services where they get votes.”
Rand Water’s Response
Rand Water has emphasized that the maintenance is essential to prevent future supply collapses, particularly as demand rises in summer. However, the utility has placed responsibility on municipalities to ensure communities receive emergency water supplies during the maintenance period.
A Call for Urgent Intervention
As Coronationville braces for further disruptions, residents are demanding immediate action from the City of Johannesburg.
“We need solutions, not excuses,” Melissa said. “Our children are missing school because there’s no water. How much longer must we wait?”
