Community Mourns Mother and Son Killed in Alleged Attack, Suspect to Face Court

A community in the Northern Cape gathered under a cloud of grief on Saturday, 25 October, to lay to rest a nine-year-old boy and his mother, who were brutally killed earlier in the week.

The victims, Sylvia Pule and her son, Phillip Pule, were stabbed to death on Monday at their home in Cassel Village. According to reports, the young boy was killed while attempting to protect his mother from a 28-year-old man who was allegedly trying to rape her. The suspect is currently behind bars.

The somber funeral service in Glenred Village, outside Kuruman, drew family, friends, and community members to pay their final respects. The mood was described as one of profound loss and a desperate yearning for justice.

A family member revealed the brutal nature of the crime, stating that the caskets had to remain closed during the service. The violence was so severe that the family was advised not to view the bodies, as the sight would be too traumatic.

Katherine Pule, the grandmother of the young boy and mother of the deceased woman, recounted the harrowing scene. She stated that upon her arrival, police officers advised her not to enter the home due to the brutality of the attack.

The incident has cast a spotlight on the recurring nature of such violence in the region. It was noted that this is not an isolated case, drawing a painful parallel to a 2016 incident where a six-year-old child in the Northern Cape was also killed while trying to protect their mother.

The 28-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the court on Monday for a bail application. The community now waits, hoping the judicial process will deliver justice for a mother and her courageous son.
