The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, has acknowledged the swift apprehension of a suspect in connection with the murder of a local councillor in Klerksdorp.
Police were alerted to an incident in the Klerksdorp Central Business District (CBD) at approximately 05:35 on Friday, 13 February 2026. Upon arrival at the scene on Voortrekker Street, located outside a tavern, officers discovered the body of a 46-year-old man lying on the ground with a stab wound to the neck. The victim was later identified as Sello Molefi, a councillor at the Matlosana Municipality. Emergency medical personnel attended the scene and pronounced the victim dead.
A multidisciplinary investigation was immediately launched, involving members of the Potchefstroom Anti-Gang Investigation Unit, Klerksdorp Detectives, and the Provincial Organised Crime Unit. Preliminary investigative work indicates that the deceased was allegedly stabbed during an argument, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a girlfriend.
A 35-year-old suspect voluntarily handed himself over to the police and was subsequently arrested and detained. He is scheduled to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 February 2026, facing a charge of murder.
