Fannin County Deputy Injured in Planned Ambush Shooting; Suspect Takes Own Life

A Fannin County deputy was shot at and injured Thursday afternoon while responding to a disturbance call just outside the town of Leonard, Texas.

According to investigators, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on County Road 5012. The first deputy to arrive was fired upon before he could even exit his vehicle. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Corey Goode, fired 14 rounds from a concealed location using a scoped rifle.

Images of the deputy’s patrol car showed multiple bullet holes concentrated around the driver’s seat. Investigators determined that Goode took his own life at the scene and described the attack as a planned and intentional ambush with the clear intent to kill.

The deputy was not struck by any bullets but sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and shattered car windows. He was treated at a hospital in McKinney and has since been released.

Fannin County Sheriff Cody Shook stated that this was an orchestrated, planned and intentional ambush.

Goode had an extensive criminal history that included violent crimes and drug offenses. Court records show 11 previous convictions, ranging from possession of marijuana to assault causing bodily injury.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. No shots were fired by law enforcement officers at the scene. Multiple agencies, including the Texas Rangers, are assisting with the ongoing probe.
