Police in Letsitele, Mopani District, have opened an inquest docket following the drowning deaths of two boys, aged 6 and 7, in the Xilovola river in Nkambako village on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 09:00. Police on patrol duty received a complaint of a drowning and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found the two minor male victims lying on the ground outside the river. Emergency Medical Services personnel were present and had declared both boys dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicates the boys were swimming in the river when they drowned. A younger brother who was present at the time ran home to alert their parents. The parents then notified community members, who recovered the boys from the water.
Forensic Pathology Services will conduct postmortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed sadness over the loss of the two young lives. She urged parents and guardians to monitor the whereabouts of their children at all times to prevent similar incidents.
Police investigations are continuing.
