Hekpoort Man Receives Life Term for Rape and Assault

A 34-year-old man, Thabang Kobedi, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court on 18 May 2026 following convictions for rape and associated violent crimes, a development welcomed by the Hekpoort cluster of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The case originated on Wednesday, 2 April 2025, at around 20:00, when SAPS officers responded to a report of an assault. At the scene, they encountered a 60-year-old man who had sustained multiple facial injuries.

Initial inquiries indicated that Kobedi was the alleged perpetrator of the assault on the elderly man. The victim told investigators he had been accompanied by his wife before the attack. With assistance from local community members, police launched a search for the woman and successfully located her. Further investigation established that she had allegedly been raped by the suspect.

Kobedi was subsequently traced and taken into custody. The matter was handed over to Sergeant Motlatsi Mashiloane of the West Rand District Detectives Unit for comprehensive investigation. Through methodical investigative efforts and strong collaboration between detectives and the community, the prosecution secured a conviction.

The court imposed the following sentences on Kobedi:

  • Life imprisonment for the crime of rape;
  • Four years’ imprisonment for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH);
  • Four years’ imprisonment for common assault.

Warrant Officer Mavis Tlhoaele, Acting Station Commander of Hekpoort SAPS, expressed satisfaction with the sentencing outcome. She extended appreciation to the investigative team under Sergeant Mashiloane, as well as to community members whose cooperation proved instrumental throughout the case.

“We commend the dedication of our detectives and the vigilance of our community partners,” stated Warrant Officer Tlhoaele. “This outcome reinforces the value of public-police collaboration in pursuing justice. We continue to encourage residents to report criminal activity promptly and to maintain close working relationships with law enforcement to help eradicate crime in our area.”

The conviction and sentencing underscore ongoing efforts by South African authorities to address gender-based violence and violent crime through robust investigation, prosecution, and community engagement.
