BLOEMFONTEIN, Free State — Authorities have arrested more than 140 people following incidents of public violence and looting involving shops owned by foreign nationals during ongoing shutdown protests in parts of Mangaung. The demonstrations, which started on Sunday evening and continued into Monday, have caused major disruptions across Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu.
The shutdown was organised by the National Service Delivery Forum under the leadership of Potso Motoko. Protest organisers are demanding an end to outsourcing and privatisation within municipal structures, as well as the suspension of officials and service providers accused of corruption, nepotism, and maladministration.
Motoko said the forum does not support vandalism or looting, insisting the aim of the protest is to pressure authorities into addressing community concerns. According to him, complaints relating to corruption in the municipality, declining service delivery, and deteriorating infrastructure such as damaged roads have repeatedly been raised with the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality and provincial government officials without meaningful intervention.
Although conditions were reportedly calmer compared with the previous day, the impact of the shutdown has remained widespread. Interstate bus operations between Bloemfontein, Botshabelo, and Thaba Nchu were suspended, disrupting travel for around 24,000 commuters who depend on the routes for employment and schooling each day. Taxi operators also joined the protest action, further limiting transport options.
As a result, many residents, including school learners and night-shift employees, were forced to walk long distances to reach their destinations. Some commuters said they had to make their way to the N8 highway in hopes of finding lifts from passing motorists.
Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the unrest while community representatives call for renewed engagement between residents and government authorities. The protests have once again drawn attention to long-running frustrations over governance, municipal services, and infrastructure challenges in the region.
