Law Enforcement Agencies Disrupt Illicit Tobacco Network in Thaba Nchu; R23,000 in Contraband Seized

Authorities have dismantled a suspected illicit cigarette distribution hub in the Thaba Nchu Central Business District following a coordinated enforcement action on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.

The operation, driven by tactical intelligence, involved officials from the Mangaung Metro District Operational Command Centre (DOCC) Task Team, the Mangaung District Operational Centre (MDOC), and Ladybrand Customs. The collaborative effort targeted a wholesale business suspected of trafficking counterfeit and contraband goods—a key focus in broader initiatives to counter economic sabotage.

Upon executing a search warrant at the premises, which is registered to a foreign national male, enforcement officers uncovered and confiscated six (6) master cases containing multiple brands of illicit cigarettes, together with a substantial volume of rolling papers. The seized goods carry an estimated street value of R23,000.

A 39-year-old male suspect was taken into custody at the location. He has been charged with possession of illicit cigarettes and violations of the Customs and Excise Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court in the near future. No additional details have been disclosed as the matter remains sub judice.
