A senior political figure, the 46-year-old chief whip of a major party, appeared before authorities on Thursday, 28 May 2026, after being arrested on fraud charges linked to an alleged salary extortion scheme targeting party employees.
Prosecutors allege that between August 2024 and December 2024, the suspect recruited four individuals as party researchers. Once employed, she reportedly demanded regular payments from each staff member, claiming the funds were needed to cover legal expenses for the party’s President.
According to the charges, the four victims were pressured into handing over between 50% and 60% of their monthly salaries. The total sum allegedly defrauded amounts to R233,317.99.
The suspect was served with an arrest warrant on Thursday and is set to appear in the Cape Magistrate’s Court today, 28 May 2026, for her first court appearance. Authorities have not released the name of the political party or the President referenced in the charges, citing ongoing investigative protocols.
The case remains under active investigation, with prosecutors indicating that additional charges or implicated parties could emerge as proceedings advance.
