Illegal Gold Mining Operation Disrupted at Mpumalanga Farm

Schoemanskloof, Mpumalanga — Law enforcement authorities have detained five suspects following a coordinated raid on Mashobota farm in Schoemanskloof, Mbombela, Mpumalanga, where illegal gold mining operations were underway. The multi-agency response was triggered by sustained intelligence reports pointing to unlawful extraction activities on the property.

During the operation, officials recovered machinery and tools used to process gold-bearing ore and documented extensive, deep excavations across the farm. However, the majority of individuals involved in the illicit activity escaped prior to the arrival of authorities.

A provincial law enforcement spokesperson noted concerns regarding operational security. “What concerned me is that it was an operation prepared in a short space of time, not to allow the information to go out,” the official said. The discovery of rocks strategically placed on access roads further indicated that suspects may have been alerted in advance.

Internal compromise was also cited as a challenge. “Crime intelligence is assisting us with information, yet within our structures there are police officers who are working with these people, giving them tip-offs about when operations are undertaken,” a police representative stated.

The Mashobota farm incident highlights an evolving pattern in illegal mining across the province. According to a provincial official, intelligence had identified unlawful activity at a site previously associated with legitimate mining operations. “We thought these illegal miners would operate at abandoned old mines, but they have established a new site altogether,” the official explained. This development compounds existing pressures from illicit mining in other established areas of Mpumalanga.

In light of these events, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga has announced it will closely monitor the provincial government’s strategies to curb illegal mining activities within nature reserves and adjacent communities.

The five detained individuals remain in custody, and seized equipment is being held as forensic investigations continue into organized illicit mining networks operating in the region.
