Two Arrested Near Upington in R134,250 Drug Seizure

Two men, aged 37 and 39, were arrested near Askham in the ZF Mgcawu District of the Northern Cape following the seizure of illegal drugs with an estimated combined street value of R134,250.

The arrests occurred on Wednesday, 03 June 2026, at approximately 21:00, when members of the Witdraai South African Police Service (SAPS) were conducting routine patrols along the R360 road between Upington and Askham. Officers observed a silver vehicle occupied by two males and initiated a traffic stop.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police discovered a large plastic bag containing multiple smaller bags of dagga (cannabis), with an estimated value of R31,750. Additionally, hundreds of Mandrax tablets were recovered, valued at approximately R102,500.

Both suspects were immediately arrested on charges of dealing in drugs. The silver vehicle used in the alleged commission of the crime was seized and will be held as evidence.

The suspects are expected to appear shortly before the Rietfontein Magistrate’s Court to face formal charges related to drug dealing.

Major General Monica Sebili, District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, commended the Witdraai SAPS members for their vigilance and dedication in executing the operation. She reiterated law enforcement’s commitment to combating narcotics trafficking within the district.

“Law enforcement agencies will continue to intensify efforts to combat drug-related crime,” Major General Sebili stated. “Offenders will be arrested and brought to book.”

The South African Police Service urges community members to report suspicious activity related to drug dealing through official channels to support ongoing crime prevention initiatives.
