Suspect Flees on Foot as Hoedspruit Police and Farm Watch Confiscate R575,000 in Illegal Cigarettes

A coordinated effort between Hoedspruit police and a local Farm Watch group has led to the seizure of a massive illegal cigarette haul, though the suspected smuggler managed to escape the scene.

The interception occurred during the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026, when authorities pulled over a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV suspected of transporting contraband. Upon being stopped, the unidentified male driver immediately bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot, successfully evading capture.

Following the suspect’s escape, officers searched the abandoned SUV and uncovered 23 boxes of illicit cigarettes. The confiscated goods carry an estimated street value of R575,000, exceeding the half-million-rand mark.

Authorities have launched a search for the fugitive and are appealing to the community for assistance in identifying and locating him.
