Manhunt Launched After Ward Councillor Murder in Gqeberha’s Zwide Township

GQEBERHA — A major police manhunt has been launched following a fatal ward councillor murder in Gqeberha’s Zwide township, where a local government representative was shot dead during an armed robbery at his office.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the deadly incident occurred on 20 June 2026 at approximately 18:50. At the time of the attack, the 45-year-old victim was hosting a meeting with roughly 10 people at his workspace.

According to authorities, two unidentified armed men forcefully entered the premises while the gathering was actively underway. The assailants held the attendees at gunpoint, demanding that everyone present surrender their cellphones.

During the robbery, one of the gunmen opened fire on the 45-year-old man. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the attack. The two perpetrators immediately fled the location, and the councillor was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers.
