Five Arrested in Gugulethu Illicit Liquor Raid; Two Nabbed in Bishop Lavis Drug Bust

Western Cape police dismantle an unlicensed brewing operation in NY108 and seize 92 mandrax tablets during targeted law enforcement crackdowns.

WESTERN CAPE — Authorities have dismantled an unlicensed brewing operation following a Gugulethu illicit liquor raid that resulted in the arrest of five individuals. The intelligence-led operation, which took place on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, was part of a broader law enforcement sweep that also yielded a significant drug seizure in a separate incident.

Acting on actionable intelligence regarding a hidden manufacturing hub, the Gugulethu Crime Prevention Unit descended on a residence located at NY108. Upon entering the premises, officers encountered four men and one woman inside the home. A thorough search of the property uncovered the infrastructure of a bootlegging ring. Investigators seized small containers, branding labels, and sealed boxes packed with bottled alcohol, alongside specialized equipment used for mixing and packaging the products. Further inspection of the premises revealed large vats filled with mixed chemicals intended for the brewing process.

The five individuals—ranging in age from 19 to 50—were taken into custody. They are facing charges of manufacturing illicit liquor, a direct violation of Section 32(1) of the Western Cape Liquor Act 4 of 2008. The accused are slated to make their first court appearance at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once the formal charging process is complete.

In a concurrent enforcement action, members of Operation Lockdown 3 were conducting stop-and-search procedures in the Valhalla Park area of Bishop Lavis. During the patrol, officers flagged a suspicious vehicle for inspection. As the police approached, an occupant of the car was observed discarding a plastic bag. Upon retrieval and inspection, the bag was found to contain 92 intact mandrax tablets.

Two men, aged 45 and 55, were immediately apprehended at the scene on suspicion of drug possession. They are scheduled to appear before the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court to face formal charges once the state’s docket is finalized.
