NORTH WEST — A coordinated law enforcement operation in Potchefstroom has resulted in the arrest of three suspects in connection with a major stock theft case, leading to the recovery of stolen cattle.
On Friday, 27 June 2026, the Potchefstroom Police Station registered a case after a livestock owner reported the theft of 25 head of cattle. In response to the incident, a multidisciplinary task team was immediately activated. This joint operation comprised members of the Potchefstroom Public Order Police (POP), the Potchefstroom Flying Squad, Potchefstroom Crime Intelligence, the Potchefstroom Stock Theft Unit, and local farmers.
The collaborative effort yielded swift results later that same day along the N12 Road near Potchefstroom. Police apprehended three suspects identified as 47-year-old Santo Ponya, 43-year-old Moeti Peter Mosia, and 34-year-old Samuel Nhlapo. During the arrest, authorities recovered 16 head of cattle found in the suspects’ possession. The lawful owner positively identified the recovered animals as part of the originally stolen herd.
The trio made their first appearance at the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026. They are facing charges of stock theft and possession of suspected stolen livestock. The three have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to return to court on Monday, 6 July 2026, for a bail application.
Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West, commended the officers and all involved stakeholders for their rapid response. He highlighted the excellent collaboration between the police and the farming community that facilitated the successful arrests.
Maj Gen Naidoo emphasized that ensuring rural safety remains a top priority for the SAPS, noting its direct contribution to the national economy. He reiterated the police service’s ongoing commitment to combating stock theft and securing rural communities across the province.
