EASTERN CAPE — A midnight Despatch drug bust resulted in the apprehension of a 23-year-old suspect and the confiscation of narcotics valued at R16,000. Local law enforcement officers made the seizure while executing a targeted search warrant in the Reservoir Hills neighborhood early Friday morning.
The operation commenced at roughly 02:20 on July 3, 2026, when officers arrived at a property on Oeivaar Street. According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, the homeowner initially answered the door. However, upon recognizing the authorities, the 23-year-old quickly retreated inside, grabbed a backpack, and attempted to escape on foot.
Law enforcement personnel immediately initiated a foot pursuit. During the scramble, the fleeing individual discarded the backpack. While one officer maintained the chase and ultimately apprehended the suspect, the remaining team secured the abandoned bag. The SAPS spokesperson noted that the backpack was locked with a padlock, which officers forcibly cut open in the suspect’s presence.
After bringing the suspect back to the Oeivaar Street residence, investigators uncovered an active drug packaging setup. The spokesperson detailed the exact contents recovered from the locked backpack, which included 350 bankies of tik, 175 whole Mandrax tablets, and 136 bankies of khat. Authorities estimated the total street value of the confiscated narcotics at R16,000.
Following the discovery of the distribution materials and the seized substances, the 23-year-old was formally arrested. He is currently facing charges of dealing in drugs and is slated to make an upcoming appearance before the Despatch Magistrate’s Court.
