Calcutta Drive-By Shooting in Mpumalanga Leaves Four Dead as Police Target Mastermind

Authorities launch a multi-tiered manhunt in Bushbuckridge following a targeted vehicle ambush, deploying national investigators to combat a deadly surge in local violence.

CALCUTTA, Mpumalanga — A targeted Calcutta drive-by shooting in Mpumalanga has left four people dead and another critically injured, triggering a massive, multi-tiered law enforcement response in the Bushbuckridge region. The fatal ambush, which occurred on Sunday evening, marks a grim milestone in an area that has now recorded 37 violent deaths since the beginning of the year.

The incident unfolded at approximately 8:45 PM when a vehicle carrying five occupants was ambushed as it approached the gate of a residential property in the Mkhuhlu township area. Armed assailants opened fire on the car, riddling it with bullets. Three men and one woman, all between the ages of 19 and 30, were pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth occupant, a male, was rushed to Matuana Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, addressed the media to outline the ongoing investigation. He characterized the attack as a calculated “hit-and-run” execution, noting that the brazen nature of the crime has deeply intimidated the local community. This fear has significantly hindered the immediate gathering of eyewitness testimony.

Despite the lack of public cooperation, Major General Mkhwanazi confirmed that intelligence operations are actively tracking several potential motives. Investigators are currently exploring whether the ambush is linked to violent rivalries within the local taxi industry, disputes over municipal tenders, or conflicts stemming from rhino poaching syndicates operating in the broader Bushbuckridge area. While specific leads are being followed, authorities stressed they will not prematurely disclose details that could compromise the integrity of the case.

The escalating crisis prompted an emergency summit convened by Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, who met with the Member of the Executive Council (MEC), municipal leadership, and provincial police commanders. During the briefing, Premier Ndlovu revealed a significant breakthrough: investigators have identified a specific “person of interest” believed to be the primary mastermind behind the recent spate of killings.

Premier Ndlovu issued a stern four-day deadline to the Provincial Commissioner to present a comprehensive progress report on the investigation by Friday. He emphasized that the province will not tolerate its communities becoming safe havens for criminal enterprises.

“We are ready to arrest this individual, and our soonest is soonest,” Premier Ndlovu stated, assuring residents that the government will not be handed over to criminals. He further confirmed that the response has been elevated beyond the provincial level. Following direct engagement with the National Police Commissioner, a team of specialized, elite national investigators is being deployed to the region to assist local detectives in securing a breakthrough.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by staggering statistics. Prior to Sunday’s ambush, authorities had already registered 33 homicide cases in the Calcutta and Mkhuhlu belt since January 2026. The addition of the four latest victims brings the year-to-date death toll to 37.

While police have significantly increased their visible deployment and nighttime patrols in the affected zones, both Major General Mkhwanazi and Premier Ndlovu emphasized that community cooperation remains the most critical tool in dismantling these criminal networks. Authorities are urgently appealing to residents to overcome their intimidation and share any information, assuring the public that highly trained, rapid-response units are prepared to make imminent arrests without fear or favor.
