The fatal ambush, which occurred on Sunday evening, marks a grim milestone in an area that has now recorded 37 violent deaths since the beginning of the year.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:45 PM when a vehicle carrying five occupants was ambushed as it approached the gate of a residential property in the Mkhuhlu township area. Armed assailants opened fire on the car, riddling it with bullets. Three men and one woman, all between the ages of 19 and 30, were pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth occupant, a male, was rushed to Matuana Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life.
Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, addressed the media to outline the ongoing investigation.
