FREE STATE – A targeted Meloding explosives arrest has resulted in the detention of two men, aged 37 and 47, following a collaborative law enforcement raid in the Lejweleputswa District. The operation was executed by the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) acting on critical leads from Thabong Crime Intelligence, successfully intercepting a planned illegal transaction.
On Tuesday, 14 July 2026, the Welkom AGU received actionable intelligence indicating that individuals in the area were unlawfully holding explosive materials with the explicit intent to sell them to prospective buyers. Officers promptly mobilized this information, tracking the suspects to a residential property located in the Senzela Section of Meloding.
Upon executing a search at the identified dwelling, authorities uncovered a cache of eleven (11) cone-pack explosives. Given the hazardous nature of the discovery, the specialized Explosives Unit was immediately dispatched to the scene to manage the safe extraction and handling of the devices.
The recovered explosives were officially seized and logged into the police system as evidentiary exhibits. The two apprehended individuals now face formal charges for violating Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the accused are scheduled for an imminent appearance at the Virginia Magistrate’s Court to answer to the allegations.
