EASTERN CAPE — A recent Eastern Cape stock theft arrest has resulted in a 72-year-old man facing court after police recovered livestock valued at approximately R25,000. The bust, carried out by specialized units in the Mthatha district, underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat rural crime and protect local agricultural communities from severe financial losses.
The suspect, a resident of the Tyelebana locality within the Xhongorha A/A area, was taken into custody on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. He falls under the jurisdiction of the Bityi policing precinct. According to SAPS spokespersons, the apprehension was the direct result of a strategic follow-up operation conducted by the Mthatha Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit.
During the targeted raid, officers discovered the elderly man in possession of 16 sheep and two lambs. Investigators quickly noted that the animals’ identification marks had been deliberately altered to obscure their true ownership. When confronted about the modified brands, the suspect failed to give a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the flock, SAPS spokespersons confirmed.
The recovered livestock has been secured as crucial evidence while the investigation continues.
Following his detention, the 72-year-old accused was scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. He is set to formally answer to charges of possession of suspected stolen livestock.
