Tsineng Men Handed Effective Prison Sentences in Kuruman Attempted Murder Case

A regional court has jailed two suspects for eight effective years after they brutally struck a 37-year-old victim with a rock, concluding a comprehensive police probe in the Northern Cape.

NORTHERN CAPE — Two Tsineng men have been handed effective prison sentences following a Kuruman attempted murder conviction, wrapping up a rigorous judicial process in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. The regional court finalized the sentencing of the duo, who were found guilty of a brutal 2023 rock attack that left their victim fighting for his life.

The violent encounter took place on Saturday, 28 October 2023. According to court proceedings, 33-year-old Tlhophang Batsamai and 25-year-old Tiisetso Tlhaole viciously attacked 37-year-old Khumoetsile Aubrey Malekanyo. The perpetrators used a rock to strike the victim on the head, causing critical trauma. Malekanyo was rushed to a local hospital on the same day, where medical staff treated him for severe head injuries.

Law enforcement swiftly opened an attempted murder docket following the hospital admission. The breakthrough in the case was driven by Detective Sergeant Khumoetsile Setlhauno, operating out of the Batlharos Detective Service. Through meticulous investigative work and the careful pursuit of every available lead, Setlhauno successfully connected both suspects to the violent assault.

Facing the Regional Court in Kuruman, Batsamai and Tlhaole were found guilty of the attempted murder charges. The court sentenced each man to 12 years behind bars. However, the magistrate suspended four years of this term for a five-year period. The suspension is strictly conditional: the pair must not be convicted of attempted murder or any closely related crime during that timeframe.

As a result of the suspended portion, both men will serve an effective eight-year prison term. Furthermore, the court declared both offenders legally unfit to own or possess any firearms.
