FREE STATE – Law enforcement authorities have successfully apprehended two suspects linked to the Mafora murder of Shuping Cecil Debi, following a highly coordinated joint police operation in the Free State. These swift arrests come in the wake of a fatal shooting that took place in the early hours of Saturday, 25 April 2026, demonstrating the rapid response capabilities of local and provincial investigators.
The incident unfolded at approximately 04:10 when Debi was navigating a red Ford Fiesta through the Mafora area. According to official reports, two unidentified male assailants ambushed the vehicle and opened fire. The barrage of gunshots caused the car to lose control, veer off the roadway, breach a perimeter fence, and ultimately come to a stop inside a nearby residential property.
First responders, including police officers and emergency medical personnel, arrived promptly at the crash site. They discovered the victim inside the automobile suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. Despite immediate medical intervention, Debi succumbed to his wounds and was officially pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have confirmed that the underlying motive for the targeted attack remains under active investigation.
In response to the homicide, a specialized multi-disciplinary task team was rapidly deployed.
