NORTHERN CAPE — An Olifantshoek man sentenced to two life terms for raping two minor girls has finally faced justice, bringing closure to a community shaken by the horrific crime. The 40-year-old offender was handed the maximum penalty by the Kathu Regional Court, concluding a legal process that began with the quick thinking of a vigilant local resident.
Swift Intervention Prevents Further Harm
The harrowing incident occurred on Saturday, 11 October 2025, at a local dumping site. The two victims, aged 7 and 10, were targeted by the 40-year-old accused while they were playing in the area.
The assault was interrupted and ultimately stopped due to the vigilance of a passer-by. Noticing the man with the young children at the dumping site, the suspicious good Samaritan intervened. He safely escorted the children to his home and immediately alerted their parents. Upon being questioned by their family, the young victims disclosed that the man had sexually assaulted them while they were playing.
Thorough Investigation Leads to Immediate Arrest
Following the parents’ report to the authorities on the same day, law enforcement launched an immediate response, resulting in the prompt arrest of the suspect.
The complex investigation was spearheaded by Detective Constable Refilwe Rapelang, a dedicated member of the Kathu Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Her meticulous gathering of evidence and thorough investigative work laid the crucial groundwork for the state’s prosecution, ensuring that the charges would hold up in court.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
After appearing in court on several occasions over the ensuing months, the legal proceedings culminated on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.
The Kathu Regional Court found the accused guilty on two separate counts of rape. In a decisive ruling, the court sentenced him to two life terms in prison. The presiding judicial officer ordered that the sentences run concurrently, ensuring the offender will remain behind bars for a considerable period.
Law Enforcement Commends Justice Served
Following the conviction, Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, released a statement welcoming the stringent sentence.
Brigadier Baloyi specifically commended Detective Constable Rapelang for her exceptional investigative work. He noted that her dedication ensured the offender was successfully brought to justice and will be kept off the streets, highlighting the critical importance of specialized FCS units in protecting vulnerable children and holding perpetrators accountable.
