NORTHERN CAPE — A would-be Loeriesfontein burglary suspect is in custody after an ill-conceived hiding strategy failed to fool sharp-eyed local authorities. The 31-year-old man was discovered wedged underneath a sofa following a chaotic break-in, leading to swift charges of housebreaking and theft.
The incident unfolded on the evening of 2 August 2026, between 22:00 and 23:00. Two South African Police Service (SAPS) members were conducting routine neighborhood patrols when they detected suspicious movements at a local residence previously reported as unoccupied. Upon approaching the property on foot, the officers heard distinct noises echoing from inside the structure.
A preliminary exterior sweep presented a puzzling scene: various household items were scattered across the yard outside the premises, yet all doors and windows remained securely fastened. The intruder’s method of entry became clear when officers spotted a removed roof sheet, indicating the individual had bypassed standard entry points to gain unlawful access.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, additional backup units were summoned to the scene. With explicit consent from the property owner, officers infiltrated the home through the compromised roof. Inside, they confirmed that the residence had been thoroughly ransacked.
During a comprehensive search of the property, the officers made an unexpected discovery. The intruder was found attempting to conceal himself underneath a sofa in a desperate bid to evade capture. Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, the improvised furniture hideout proved entirely ineffective, and he was promptly taken into custody without further incident.
Following the successful arrest, the District Commissioner of Namakwa publicly commended the involved SAPS members for their exceptional vigilance, sound tactical decision-making, and rapid response time.
The suspect has since been formally charged with housebreaking and theft. He is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Calvinia Magistrate’s Court on 4 August 2026.
