NORTH WEST — In a decisive strike against illegal mining in Rustenburg, the Hawks have successfully impounded heavy mining equipment valued at an estimated R5 million. The high-profile seizure targets the illicit extraction of resources and removes critical infrastructure from the hands of criminal syndicates operating in the region.
Acting on precise intelligence regarding unlawful extraction sites, the Rustenburg-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit launched a tactical disruption at the Hencor Mine on Tuesday, 04 August 2026. The sweep was a highly coordinated effort, drawing on the specialized expertise of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources alongside the Illicit Mining and Infrastructure Task Team to dismantle the rogue excavation networks.
When the joint task force arrived at the mining grounds, the suspected operators had already fled the scene to evade capture. Left behind in the scramble were four excavators and one dump truck. Officials immediately secured the abandoned fleet, noting that the combined market value of the five pieces of heavy machinery sits at R5 million. The assets have been confiscated and moved to a secure facility to aid further forensic and criminal probes.
Leadership within the province has lauded the successful interdiction and the seamless cooperation between the various government and law enforcement departments. Major General Nombuso Khoza, the North West Hawks Head, highlighted the broader societal benefits of removing these heavily equipped syndicates from local neighborhoods.
“These disruptive operations demonstrate the Directorate’s commitment to tackling illegal mining activities, which have a negative impact on community safety,” said Major General Khoza.
