KWAZULU-NATAL — A major law enforcement dragnet has resulted in the detention of more than 80 individuals linked to a violent anti-foreign nationals march that originated in Kranskop and threatened to escalate in Greytown. Officers successfully intercepted the group in transit, neutralizing a potential riot and bringing the suspects to the local precinct for in-depth questioning.
The unrest initially sparked when demonstrators marching through Kranskop abandoned their protest and resorted to criminality. Reports from the scene indicate that the mob engaged in widespread looting of local retail stores and targeted physical assaults. Three foreign nationals sustained injuries during the rampage. While emergency personnel transported two of the victims to a medical facility for urgent treatment, authorities are actively searching for the third injured individual, whose current whereabouts remain unconfirmed.
Following the destruction in Kranskop, the demonstrators boarded a bus with the apparent intention of continuing their unlawful demonstration in Greytown. However, law enforcement intelligence units tracked their movements. Acting swiftly on this tip-off, officers established a strategic blockade on the R74 route heading toward the town. The successful interception prevented a second wave of violence and led to the mass transfer of the bus occupants to the Greytown police station for processing and investigation.
Detectives are now piecing together the timeline of the attacks and the extent of the property damage. A police spokesperson noted that preliminary checks indicate the targeted foreign nationals are residing in the country legally. Nevertheless, the Department of Home Affairs has been roped in to conduct a thorough and official verification of their immigration documentation. Furthermore, investigators are actively pursuing claims that one of the victims was stripped of an undisclosed amount of cash amid the chaos of the looting.
In response to the vigilantism, a law enforcement spokesperson issued a stern public warning regarding civic duties and protest regulations. The spokesperson emphasized that any citizen wishing to advocate for a cause must do so strictly within the confines of the law, unequivocally condemning mob justice and civilian overreach.
“No civilians are allowed to conduct door-to-door operations,” the police spokesperson stressed, clarifying that only authorized law enforcement officers possess the jurisdiction to execute stop-and-search protocols or effect arrests for any suspected crimes.
